People all over the world agree thatbeing well-mannered really means being kind and helping others, especially tothose older or weaker than ourselves. If you remember this, you will not govery far wrong.

Here are some examples of the thingsthat a well-mannered person does or does not do.

He never laughs at people when they arein trouble. Instead, he tries to help them. He is always kind, never cruel, either to people or to animals. When people are waiting for a bus, or in a postoffice, he takes his turn. He does not push to the front of the queue. In thebus, he gives his seat to an old person or a lady who is standing. If he accidentally bumps into someone, or gets in their way, he says, “excuse me” or “I'm sorry”.

He says “please” when making a request, and “thank you” when he receives something. He stands up when speaking to alady or an older person, and he does not sit down until the other person isseated. He does not interrupt other people when they are talking. He does nottalk too much himself. He does not talk loudly or laugh loudly in public. Wheneating, he does not speak with his mouth full of food. He uses a handkerchiefwhen he sneezes or coughs.

130. A friend ofmine was fond of drawing horses. He drew horses very well, but he always beganat the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse. Thatis why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make anydifference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly orthe foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artistswho really know their business do not follow other people's rule. They maketheir own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way strange to himself;and the peculiarity means only that he finds it easier to work in that way.

Now the very same thing is true ofliterature. And the question, “How shall I begin?” only means that you want tobegin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is,you are not yet experienced enough to trust your own powers. When you becomemore experienced you will never ask the question, and I think that you willoften begin at the tail-that is to say, you will write the end of the storybefore you have even thought of the beginning.
