41. We spent a day in the country and picked a lot of flowers. Our car wasfull of flowers inside! On the way home we had to stop at traffic lights, andthere my wife saw the bookshelf. It stood outside a furniture shop. "Buyit," she said at once. "We'll carry it home on the roof-rack(车顶架). I've always wanted one like that."
What could I do? Ten minutes later I was twenty dollars poorer, and thebookshelf was tied on to the roof rack. It was tall and narrow, quite heavy, too.
As it was getting darker, I drove slowly. Other drivers seemed more politethan usual that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through.Carrying furniture was a good idea.
After a time my wife said, "There's a long line of cars behind. Whydon't they overtake(超车)?" Just at that time a police car didovertake. The two officers inside looked at us seriously when they went past. But then, with a kind smile they asked us to follow their car through the busytraffic. The police car stopped at our village church. One of the officers cameto me.
"Right, sir," he said. "Do you need any more helpnow?"
I didn't quite understand. "Thanks, officer," I said."You've been very kind. I live just down the road."
He was looking at our things: first at the flowers, then at the bookshelf."Well, well," he said and laughed. "It's a bookshelf you've gotthere! We thought it was--er, something else."
My wife began to laugh. Suddenly I understood why the police drove here. Ismiled at the officer. "Yes, it's a bookshelf, but thanks again." Idrove home as fast as I could.

42. Our child's behavior is greatly influenced by the way we react to whathe has done. Our reactions help to determine whether our child will repeat hisbehavior or whether he will do something different. This statement is a veryimportant part of a principle of behavioral psychology.
The principle states that a behavior is influenced or affected by how theenvironment ---- people, places and things ---- immediately responds to thebehavior. Perhaps without realizing it, you have used this principle manytimes.
On the occasion when you told your child what a good boy he was after hecleaned up his room, you used the principle. When you sent your child to hisroom for fighting with his brother, you used the principle. When I gave Kim acookie after she started to cry, I used the principle. In each of theseexamples, a particular behavior occurred first ---- cleaning up a room, fighting, and crying.
In addition, there was a reaction to each behavior ---- the child waspraised, sent to his room, or given a cookie. By these actions, we haveinfluenced the previous behaviors and have helped to determine whether thosebehaviors will occur again in the future.

44. I was very disappointed not to be able to go to the jazz concert lastFriday. The advertisement in the paper said that you could buy tickets at thetheatre(剧院)box office in Richland Hills any day between10:00 and 4:00. Since I work from 9 o'clock to 5:30, the only time I could goto the theater was during my 45-minute lunch break. Unluckily, the theatre ison the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office andRichland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the roundtrip in 45 minutes.
Last Monday, I stood at the bus stop for 15 minutes waiting for a bus. Bythe time I saw one come around the corner, there was not enough time left tomake the trip, so I gave up and went back to the office. The same thinghappened on Tuesday, and again on Wednesday. On Thursday, my luck changed, Igot on a bus right away and arrived at the theatre in exactly 20 minutes. WhenI got there, however, I found a long line of people at the box office. I heardone man say he had been waiting in line for over an hour. Realizing I would nothave enough time to wait in line, I caught the next bus and headed back acrossthe town. By Friday I realized my only hope was to make the trip by taxi. Itwas not cheap, but I felt it would be worth it to hear the concert. The trip bytaxi only took 10 minutes, but it felt like an hour to me. When I got to thetheatre, I was relieved to see that nobody was waiting in line. Thereason, I quickly discovered, was that they had already sold all the tickets.
