14. Americans, like many people elsewhere in the world, like to invitefriends to their homes for an evening of food, drink and conversation. Formaldinners in fine homes and hotels in the United States are much the same asformal dinners anywhere in the world. But as most people in the United Stateshave no servants, their dinner parties at home are decidedly informal. As manynew small homes have no separate dining room or just have very small diningspace, guests can also serve themselves and eat in the living room, holdingtheir plates or trays on their knees.

A more enjoyable form of entertainment is the picnic. Americans are greatpicnickers, and almost every family has a picnic basket. Summer invitations areoften for a picnic at a park or in the open countryside. Unless hamburgers orhot dogs are cooked over a fire, picnic food is usually cold - sandwiches, salads, potato chips, pickles. Watermelon is a favoritedessert, followed very often by baseball for the young and active, and naps forthe old and weary.

15. Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything aboutit. It is true. People usually begin their talks with "Isn't it a niceday?" "Do you think it will rain?" "What a fine day!",etc.

Many people think they can tell what the weather is going to be like. Butthey hardly agree with each other. One man may say, "Do you see how cloudyit is in the east? It's going to rain tomorrow." Another man will say,"No, it's going to be fine tomorrow."

People often look for the weather they want. When a farmer needs water, helooks for something to tell him it's going to rain; he won't believe anythingelse. When friends have a travel, they are sure the weather is going to clearup very quickly.

Almost everyone listens to what the weatherman says. But he doesn't alwaystell us what we want, and once in a while he makes a mistake. Still, heprobably comes closer to being correct than anyone else.
