1. Careful and careless are different as fire and water. But it is strangethat quite a few scientists have both these qualities. They are both carefuland careless. Newton(牛顿), the famous English scientist, was such aperson.

Once Newton invited a friend to dinner at home. When they were ready toeat, Newton left to get a bottle of wine. But after his friend had waited for along time, Newton still didn't come back. At last his friend found Newton inhis lab. When Newton was going to get the bottle of wine, he suddenly had a newidea for his experiment. So he quite forgot his friend and the dinner. Anothertime, Newton was leading a horse up a mountain, and held the rein(缰绳)in his hand. While he was walking, he keptthinking about problems. When he got to the top of the mountain, he found thatthe rein was not in his hand and that the horse was gone.

Einstein(爱因斯坦)was another example. Once he was waiting for a friend at a bridge. Whilewaiting, he became lost in thought. It started to rain. The rain kept on forsome time. When he took out a piece of paper to write something down, the paperwas wet and then he knew that it was raining. But after he put the paper intohis pocket, he forgot he was standing in the rain again.

2. Oil is so important that it is sometimes called “black gold”. Almosthalf of our energy comes from oil. We use it to run our cars and factories andto heat our homes, offices and schools. Many everyday things are made from oil.Your shirt may have oil in the material. The soap you wash your hands withmight also be made from oil. Your favorite plastic toy is made from oil.

Oil is hard to find, because it is trapped deep under the earth. Once theonly way people knew there was oil someplace if it leaked out of the ground.Today, however, we have many ways of finding oil. One tool measures the pull ofgravity. Places where gravity is weaker are more likely to have oil. Anothertool is sound waves. Sound waves travel through different kinds of rocks atdifferent speeds. We can use them to find the rocks that have oil in them.

We need a lot of oil, and we are using up the oil wells we know about.Soon we must find new ways of looking for this “black gold”.

3. Mr Perkin stood at the bus-stop and watched the cars go by. Many of thecars were new Beta 400s, and most of them were yellow. Mr Perkin always worethe same clothes as other men, ate the same food as other people, and did thesame things after work, and at the end of the week, Mr Perkin did not like tobe different.

The following week, Mr Perkin bought a new, bright yellow Beta 400s. Hewas satisfied with it, and drove to work in it the very next day. He was evenmore satisfied with his new car, when he saw all the other Beta 400s, in front,behind, and on both sides of him.

Mr Perkin parked his car in a big car-park near his office, and walked therest of the way. But when he came back at five o'clock, there were so manybright yellow Beta 400s in the car-park that he did not know which car was his.He tried his key in some of the cars, but people passing by gave him a look hedidn't like. So he stopped.

Poor Mr Perkin had to wait nearly two hours until his was the only yellowBeta 400s in the car-park.

4.  Many people now keep animals aspets. Numerous people have cats and dogs in their houses. Other people likefish, caged birds, tortoises and even snakes, monkeys or lions. Millions ofdollars and much time are spent every year on pet food, equipment, taming andmedical treatment.

Of course, there are some people who do not look after their pets properlyor are even cruel to them. For this reason a royal society was created in 1824in Britain to prevent cruel treatment of animals.

In contrast to the love of pets is the fact that blood sports still existin most countries. People go hunting foxes, elephants, pandas, ducks, rabbits,and other animals, or go fishing, not because they need the meat to eat, butjust for pleasure. In some countries, blood sports like bull fighting and cockfighting are common and hunting rare animals for commercial purposes hasbrought about an even more serious problem in the protection of the ecosystem.

It is strange that people love certain animals, but enjoy killing others,in cruel ways, too.
